Dogs have been companions and lived and worked side by side man for over fourteen thousand years. This faithful friend is believed to be one of the first animals to ever be domesticated. In ancient times the wolf roamed the lands free and it is believed that the dog is a descendant of this beautiful animal. The dog is a member of the Canidae family which also has animals such as the jackals, wolves, coyote, and the fox. Dogs will mark territory by urinating on objects and they have a very good sense of smell and hearing.Depending on the breed a dogs coat can vary in many colors and thickness. In the life span of a dog it is the smaller breeds that live the longest, usually twelve years or longer. In the larger breeds the life span is usually ten years or longer.
Since the domestication of dogs man has used them for many different things. Dogs have been used for hunting, working, guarding, and for just simply household pets. Although different breeds have different characteristics dogs are known overall for their dedication and loyalty and willingness to please. Certain breeds today are used to aid man in search and rescue as well as guide dogs for the impaired.
